Recognizing the Standard Use of Verb Forms and Cases
The principal parts of a verb are different words. For example, the verb "do" has "do," "did," and "done" as its principal parts; the three words are used correctly in the following sentences.
- I do my work now. This is the verb's present tense.
- I did my work in the past. This is the verb's past tense.
- I have done my work every day. This is the verb's past participle.
When the principal parts of a verb are not easily recognized, it is suggested that three sentences of the forms shown below be written. A handbook or dictionary will also list the principal parts of a verb.

- I have ___________ every day. (past participle)
