Constructed-Response (Essay) Writing Assignment

The Writing section consists of three separate sections: selected-response questions and two essay sections that each require a response based on an essay topic.

The two essays assess your ability to write effectively in a limited period of time. The Argumentative essay topic invites you to draw from personal experience, observation, or reading to support a position with specific reasons and examples. The Informative/Explanatory essay topic asks you to extract information from two provided sources in order to identify important concerns related to an issue.

The constructed-response assignment, or essay, presents a special problem in preparing for the official test. You will not know the subjects of your essays. Your best preparation is to write 300-500 words on a variety of subjects. You will begin to get an idea of the required length and the amount of time needed to complete them. If possible, have someone else read some of your essays and make comments on them.

In the Writing section of this program, you will be given an opportunity to submit an essay for review. Take advantage of this opportunity. Remember, the best way to learn to write is by writing!
